Post subject:  Sandblasting

whats a fair price to pay for a 1600 shell to be sandblasted ???
and that includes- all underbody, engine bay and inside the door frames.

First I was quoted $500, then once the car was there $80 bucks got added.
I'm certain I'm getting srewed. :evil:
But as I need it done ASAP i have to wear it. :roll:

What have some of you fellas paid for similair jobs ???

$1000 - $1500 on average. you get what you pay for. be careful where you take your car, some places make a living blasting 3 inch thick steel, and will destroy body panels in an instant. too many times i've had customers bring their car in from their preferred ( cheap) blaster and i've had to tell them " throw that bonnet away, that bootlids rooted too" etc. etc.

Only sandblasting the areas of the car that wont buckle !
ie. engine bay and all underbody, inside door frames.

There is no way i am having any of the doors, bonnet or boot lid blasted.
Those will be stripped by hand.

MR1600---it was either sandblasting or Chemical dipping.
cant see any advantage other than cost.

sssr20--So $600 bucks isnt that bad then?


I should get the car back early next week, then the resto can start.
It's gonna look SeXy in Nissan 200SX Pewter.

bicarb blasting is an excellent alternative.

you can strip the paint off a coke can without warping it.

yeah I have seen that bicarb blasting on TV, shame no one in SA does it. :(

you could try to find someone who uses plastic media.i use it on aircraft panels at work and have also used it on fibreglass with no damage.the odd 1600 part finds its way in as well.sandblasting can also have a masking effect where it takes the colour off any surface rust giving the impression it has gone.

YAY, HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY !!!!!!

I pick my baby up from the blasters today.
Seems they got stuck into it yesturday.
I'm taking it to the paint shop at midday.

This is gonna be crunch time for what rust is in the car.
So far the only rust I have found is in the rear drivers quarter.
All the sills are rust free and so are the doors, these doors where in mint condition, apart from having some minor dents they have 0 rust. Hell there wasnt even any rust inside around the drainage holes.

But things could change once we start goindg over it at the paintshop.

I got my car shell plastic media blasted for $350 in Melbourne Bayswater. The whole car came out excellent!!! I also got the boot and bonnet done at a later date, and they came out brilliant.

All that was left was to sand blast the rusted holes, which removes all the rust, and get welding. Now she's all done, and it looks a treat!

You must remove all traces of rust before painting though. I dont think plastic blasting does a good job of that. Rips the paint off a treat though!

sr20 you are right.plastic blasting doesnt remove any rust (or corrosion on aluminium)that is why we use it on aircraft as we need to see exactly what needs to be repaired. im glad you were pleased with the job as a lot of people still dont know how good this stuff is.

I should also add,

If you wanna store your car without paint on it for a couple of weeks, getting the car plastic bead blasted coats each panel with a plastic coating, which prevents it from getting that horrible surface rust. Its not perfect though, and in some areas it may be a little thin. I stored my car in its 'blasted' state, while I was getting the body worked on, and she was fine!

I used rust converter on all of the rust sections, then got them sand blasted. (with a little gun you can go out and buy, and you buy GARNET, not sand!!! to use in it. Silica is bad for your lungs!!!)

The other thing I like, is you see a small patch of rust with the paint on, but when you get it bead blasted, you see the whole piece of rust (which is usually larger.. :cry: )
