My confession is that since moving up to QLD away from my much loved 1600's I have started to get a wandering eye and caught myself checking out a Datsun Stanza :(

I know it's not right, but I can't help it and need my fix of Datsun....................

Don't tell Cream Dream and Purple Passion about this........

As a Learner Driver my confession is this:

3 weeks ago my dad took me and the N10 out for practice in back streets near home.

As I got to Alberton Oval... the N10 stopped...

This is where you see how much of a novice I am...

I was and am still to a degree convinced it stopped cos I was going too slow.... only 20 ks...

The RAA man told me otherwise... it was the battery (which I don't understand cos it was new when I got the car).

Since then I have not practiced in the N10... I am scared I jinxed it...

LOLZ

I feel like I am cheating on my cars though :/ I shouldn't be looking at others while I am on holiday............. I am sure they are not letting other people drive them while I am gone....

My latest confession concerns my new toy - Liliana the lathe (the kids christen everything with names  ).

Picked it up a fortnight ago in Sydney, managed to get it home, get it off the trailer, up my steep driveway and down into the shed all by myself. Not an easy task given that it weighs 160kg, but went fine.

Spent the last fortnight getting the bench ready for it. Measured eveerything up so it fits in a perfect position for access and ease of use. Made up a beautiful tray to go underneath it, complete with a little sump section that fits thru a hole in the benchtop so I can fit a coolant / lubricant spray setup to it later on. Mounted the tray to the wooden benchtop, sealed it all up perfectly so nothing can leak out.

Spent last night bodgy-ing up a winch arrangement out of a few bits of steel pipe, a pair of heavy duty tie-down ratchet straps and a littl hand winch. Managed to get all 160kgs of it up onto the benchtop without dropping it.

Spent tonight cleaning all the factory rust preventative grease off it, and setting it all up, including fitting the drive belts on the end. Then lined the mounting holes up, and bolted it down to the bench. Put a lump of aluminium in the chuck, a tool in the tolpost and turned it on. It runs !!. Turned the big lump of aluminium into a small lump of aluminium. Everything just works beatifully  . I was amazed that nothing had gone wrong

Decided to try some screwcutting last thing before I packed up for the night. Went to open the cover over the change gears on the end of the lathe to set it up for screwcutting, only to find that the cover doesn't just open out, IT OPENS SLIGHTLY BACKWARDS AS WELL - STRAIGHT INTO THE SHED WALL

So now I'm going to have to unmount it and move it forward on the bench by a few inches after spending a few nights getting it just perfect (so thought) :impatient:

I got an AL-60 from Hare and Forbes. Only a small, cheap one but should do all i want it to. Plus there's a cheap milling attachment available for it if I ever feel the need (and get some spare cash).

[ img ]

Been looking at getting one for a year or more and noticed that prices have started to go up recently with our dollar's downward spiral. I was waiting to get a cheaper one (AL-50), but they were out of stock and there was no guarantee on price when they arrived from China in a month or two. So I bit the bullet and got the next one up in size and cost as it was in stock. Just as well, as the price on most of their lathes went up the following weekend - mine is nearly $300 dearer now  :chaching:

i have a myford ml7 at home and 2 decent sized lathes at work for the big stuff, they are handy things to have and know how to use. what tooling do you have? carbides or high speed steel?. how long is that guard over the chuck likley to last?
