Guard probably won't last long :roll: . Actually it was nearly a casualty before I got it set up - got a bit close to the lifting strap a few times. First mod I'm going to do is to the chuck key. It has a spring on it so it pops out if you don't apply pressure. Good idea, but a pain having to both hold it in and turn it at the same time.

Tooling so far is a cheap set of carbide ones that I got with the lathe, and a pile of old HSS ones I've had lying round for ages. I'll be building the tooling collection as I go, just buying whatever I need to do a particular job. One thing I do want to get is a few milling tools.

I've been looking round a few "hobby" lathe web sites for some tips. Some of the work people turn out on little 7 or 9 inch lathes is amazing. I think my skill level will probably be the limiting factor in what I can make.

There are quite a few jobs I've got in mind for my project. The first one is pretty uninteresting, the tiny little "post" thingies that are welded aroud the windscreen opening on a 180B that the clips for the chrome windscren trim attach to. Only simple little things, but I've lost a few due to cutting them out along with rust and can't find anything similar to do the job.

I have a few ideas around making adapters for getting CV shafts into the rear of old datto's. If the plans work out, I might knock up a few sets to recoup a bit of money (or pay for a nice milling machine :chaching: )

Nice one, Dave, thats my style of f*ck-up.... but I have a cunning plan that will save you no end of time....

Cut a small 'window' in your shed wall and attach a box with a door on it to give you
access to the cover .... if you are embarrassed you can pretend it is for storing spare 2 stroke for your mower, or something... bit of bitumen paint for weatherproofing... job done!! :thumbsup:

So last night while I was assembling my new bottom end it came to the gapping the rings part. So off I go got them all gap perfect only to find I had mixed up the 2 compression rings. So moral of the story which I would normally do but didn't, CHECK! what rings go where first. So $162.50 later I have a new set of rings on there way from CP pistons. :oops:

Just got back from a week's hols at South West Rocks, which is a 4 hour drive from home. Packing the caravan (one of the little poptop-type ones) to come home this morning, and couldn't find the 15" shifter I use to detach the jockey wheel. Not to worry, had another spanner that did the job and it was raining anyway so I was in a hurry. Got home, and was setting the van up in the driveway so all the canvas would dry out and there was the shifter - STILL SITTING ON TOP OF THE VAN'S ROOF WHERE I MUST HAVE PUT IT WHEN I WAS SETTING THE VAN UP A WEEK AGO :shock: :lol: .

How lucky was I that it didn't fly off somewhere on the highway and go through the following car's windscreen ???

Nope. Just sitting on the flat top of the van where the red arrow is. I used it to put the jockey wheel on, then put it down in the nearest convenient spot (ie on the cornwr of the roof of the van, which was still folded down).

Then raised the pop-up roof, spanner stayed up there out of sight for the week. Didn't notice it when we lowered the roof, and drove off with it still on the roof.

There is an aluminium trim around the edge of the roof that is a mm or two higher than the main roof, that's probbaly what saved it from falling off.

At one point, we did brake rather hard when traffic came to a complete standstill on the highway, I'm amazed it didn't come flying through the rear windscreen of the car.

And on a related note, I hate #$%$# Xmas traffic :evil: :evil: . On the trip up, at one point just out of Karuah we took 2 hours to travel 24km, including being completely stationary in the middle of the Pacific Highway for 20 minutes at one stage :impatient:

Probably not the first to admit to this but...

Car broke at Sandown, rolled to side of track. Got out and stood to the side of track until session finished. Tow car came and while he stuffed around hooking me up, I popped the bonnet and had a play then managed to get it started. "Quick, hurry, next session waiting to start" so off with the tow rope, I'll drive it back ot the pits, slowly, like 40km/h........up back straight.......maybe 50........listening for funny engine noises, checking out trail of blue smoke.........smaaaaaash bonnet hits windscreen. In the **** rush, forgot the bonnet pins. Bonnet now rooted but can't find another one cheap so mallet and some 2mm screws and all as good as old.

Aaaargh!

got a couple things to confess.

late late last year, after christmas i drove my brand spankin 2nd hand new nissan exa from adelaide where i bought it to my home in alice springs. before i got out of the northern suburbs my battery drained itself. whenever i put my foot on the brakes, the radio would cut out :oops: the idiot had done some dodgy wiring and wired the head unit directly up to the battery :lol: so the battery drained. after $140 later im on my way again after also replacing the back struts and all 4 wheel hubs cause he had stripped them (d#ck), i was about 3km out of pimba and the car died going up a slight hill. the battery had konked out again, brand new. i got my lil bro a lift and luckily i had a spare alternator from parts i got at the wreckers down there, that after a few hours i changed alternators, had charged my battery and ended up finding out that although the block mounting arms on the alternator were right, the other one wasnt. bit of honey to keep the pulley belt stuck to the pulley and i just made it home. actually died again as i was entering my driveway... found out after tracing wires, the D#CK had used electrical tape to tape up a join he had made in one of the alternator wires. with grease and oil in there, it had unravelled and arced out. so after 3 blown regulators, and fixing 1 for over $200, its finally working :oops: last time i buy off a dodgy asian druggie. (no offence but im 99% he was).. and then theres that old triumph i bought last night for $300

while experiencing some very heavy rain and hilly driving through fog to tamborine mtn 2 days ago. i turned on the stagea's central diff lock and the snow function to try and avoid a horriffic accident and regain some traction in the awful conditions. it did quite well in keeping traction - very impressive.

when i got to the top of the hill i stopped at a t junction and drove off. the trans made a labouring noise shot to 3000 rpm and slowly moved off. i was concerned and dismissed this as being normal bit didn't notice prior.

some more driving eventually saw myself driving up a very steep 14% hill incline. the stagea had no guts and the trans kept slipping. i tried to kick it back but it wouldn't! stompin on the gas it would not change down and shoot up the hill using all 206ks under the bonnet and then into orbit around the earth.

i got to the top of the hill and parked the car immediately expecting the worst, the car had no guts and was like it was sluggish. i hit the brakes and gave it guts, and just murmured and refuded to even struggle against the brakes.

no A/T light or temp light was shining or anything but still i tried to inspect the trans by lifting the bonnet, then after not knowing where or what to look for (different from a manual l20 thats for sure!) i ended up sliding under the car in 2 inches of water to see what was going on, if there were leaks or anything.

couldn't see anything obvious and immediately started a fit of swearing.

feeling devisated i knew i would have to try drive back to gladstone from brisbane with a badly slipping auto transmission (well something wrong anyway) have it on a truck or pay millions of dollars for a new trans.

soaking wet the girlfriend and i got out and had a coffee and i had a sulk - stupid car...

we finished the coffees and got back into the car i engaged drive

the car struggled to move off and a tear ran down my face as i started the decent back to the gold coast




then and i realised snow mode was still on...

which means it takes off in 2nd and reduces boost to 0.2 bar and other things to avoid breaking traction...

i then looked down at my muddy jeans and white t shirt and realised what a D!ck i am...

feels good to get this off my chest :giggle:

I also confess to falling fowl of the 'snow' mode on a borrowed Astra.

It just rained and the car was GUTLESS im thinkn what a POS. after putting around and sluggishly taking off i noticed the illuminated snowflake button next the trans selector :lol:

at around midday today i crashed (read as plowed) my 1200 ute into a gate post in my drive way :( , i wont bother going into to much detail, other than being my fault..

ive only had this on the road for may be 2 months and now i have to fit and respray a new bonnet, grille, front apron, front bumper and also destroyed my little chin lip that i made and loved so much..

Many years ago, I was digging a trench for my dad and got a massive blister on the palm of my hand. When going home I saw the neighbours mongrel cat out front. It was frozen with fear as I took a cheap shot at it with the front of my trusty old HK monaro. Lined her up with enough room to get in the drive at breakneck speed and put my raw open blister on the wheel and lost concentration for a split second and WHAM!!! Got the cat and the brick letterbox wiping out the front bar and GTS guard.... Unlucky Cat and unlucky car.

Some would say it's Karma.
