Can anyone recomend somewhere I can get an intercooler for the front of a 1600/FJ for around the $500 hundred mark. No larger than overall dimensions of 500/300/70 (including tanks)

i'm quite sure alot of places do them for under 500 delivered to your door. try modyourcar.com (or something like that) also turbo forums like antilag, performance forums, skyline/silvia/nissan/toyota/rotary forums. heaps of places do them new and theres plenty floating around 2nd hand.

Thanks Jimmy, I think I'll go for the rolins super 'cooler, looks like it will fit. 600/300/75 overall dimensions seem to be ok for the 16. 8)

oh it will fit alright. It is the one I recently bought. Looks like you will save $39 on what I paid too.

here are some pics of my car and a few others using that exact cooler.

There's one problem, I'm runnung an FJ, so the 'cooler has to go on the front of the car, as the FJ is longer than the SR. So it has to fit in behind the grill. What did you use to cut out the front of the car to fit the 'cooler in out of curiosity???

hey mate

I got mine custom fitted. It took me a long time to get up the nerve to cut the front of the datto so I did not want to stuff it up.
I had a panel beater cut of the shape with a template. He might still have it if people are interested. HE then bent the support back in as per factory and like the one on datsport's website.
He also welded in some brackets at the bottom and made some rubber insulator brackets on the top. It is actuall ehigth adjustable too.
Mine is in pretty far and I have a fabricated rad support bar so as to have the i/c right on the valence bar.
looks great and doesn't make the car look like a hack job.

cheers

Don't think that 'cooler will fit in an FJ application, maybe if the core was a little thinner, say around the 60mm mark it would be a bit easier to mount straight on the front like my existing cooler, it's just that a custom one made to the right dimensions is around the $600 mark, unless i can find one a little bit smaller than the Rolin's one. Anybody else got any idea's.

Hey Yaughan,
2 of my mates purchased coolers from www.are.com.au . Both were for fj20 1600 conversions, and they cost around $700 at the time (roughly 3 years ago), should be alot cheaper now.

They are the perfect size and minimal cutting was required, a pic of my mates front mount is here;

There are plenty of pics on the site so check it out.

I consider some of those 1600s to have had a lot of material cut out of them to fit intercoolers, rather than 'minimal'.

You can just tell that the front panel that goes behind the bumper has been trimmed from the inside or removed altogether. I've even seen 1600s with the back of the bumper chopped out!

Many with huge intercoolers also have the rod that goes from the top of the radiator support down to the front of the chassis removed altogether - this makes the top of the radiator support panel flex heaps! This section holds the bonnet down too!
