what exactly is an option 1 gearbox. I here them mentioned all the time but I can't seem to find any specs at all.
I have a 180bsss, it only has a 4 speed at the moment and I wanted to fit an original 5 speed.
I have also heard of an option 2 box.
Any info or specs would be appreciated.

i think option 1 is a nissan race box with the same ratios as the 260z 5 speed 2.906:1 1st eg the higher the option no the closer the ratios. i think option two and forth had 1:1 5 gear meaning they were truely race boxes. Good luck finding one of those these days though

sorry my bad
option 1 has specs
2.818:1 1st, 1.973 2nd, 1.47 3rd, 1.192 4th, 1:1 5th
all the option boxes were 1:1 5th and the nismo close ratio box was still 1:1 4th. I would love to get my hands one one of the option boxes, Nearly as good as a hollinger

Quite a few who do competition work get new gears cut for their old boxes at whatever ratios they want. Its not cheap but then a decent seriously competitive car is'nt either.

i thought that the hollenger gearsets were completely custom built. The new larger stronger gears are tig welded onto a previously machined shaft. and i thought the "option" was just nismo trying to split up their race boxes into how close the ratios were.
i could be wrong though

Nissan had performancve gear sets,

basically option 1 - used in rallies
opton 2 & 3 specifically for race

I have driven option 1 & 3

All had 1:1 top gear and changed shift pattern (like a Stanza SSS, 180B SSS 5 speed.

These option gear sets were based on 260Z gearbox's. U could get close ration gear sets for

240Z, and 4 speed SSS gearobx's (maybe others that I dont know about) all the other local manufactured gear sets were not Nissan Options.

The hollinger gearsets are normally to change 1st and 2nd or 1st, 2nd, 3rd in a 240k, bluebird etc box, so overdrive 5th gear still.

As said above all the option boxes are 1:1 5th gear and as far as I know they didn't come out in production models.

From what I've heard the 280ZX and 240K (or is that the 260C?) gearboxes are the best to mod as far as getting new gears cut. They are the strongest although how they compare strength wise with boxes like that of the RB20DET and VL NA Commodore I don't know.

They usually only get one or two ratio sets cut, various diff ratios are relevant too of course.

Angle, being a man o knowledge, hopefully you can confirm/deny a related rumour.

Someone said that Hollinger didn't actually produce the two-gear/three-gear, and that Albins is actually the supplier. Of course, I've heard that Hollinger used to do it, but now doesn't, and I've heard yet another tell me that Hollinger still does?

Don't suppose you know what the truth of the matter actually is?

Sean, I put the 'as far as I know' in for when the homologation specials were brought up :P

260DET, from what I have seen the 240k, bluey, 280zx boxes are all pretty similar. Some have alloy sandwich plates, some steel, you would be best to start with a steel sandwich plate. From what I have seen the later boxes (probably all type C ???) have a wider input gearset and different countershaft bearing, so gearset wise they are probably stronger, but if you are replacing them anyway may not matter.

Fro, Not sure about the Albins thing, but a friend stripped a gear and bought his replacement from there at the end of 2002, so there may be some truth to the rumor. You could always contact hollinger, but I would expect Albins are just doing their own thing, its just making gears :)

Edited to add the type C thing
