Guys

couple of questions with regards to the s13 sr20det. I am sure there are more than a few people who might be able to help.

1. Do you know the model number type for the oil filter on the
sr20det?
Is it worth getting a nissan one or is an aftermarket OEm fine?

2. does anything special have to be done to the oil gauge sender or
can I just leave it as is and send the wire off to a gauge with no
conditioning etc?

3. is it worth step running in a car or can I just turn him on for
the first time and run it up?

1) Genuine Nissan filter part # is: 15208 53J00, Ryco filter part # is z442. NEVER use the Ryco z445, this is for the S14/15 motor that uses an ever so slightly smaller thread. This cost someone I know a motor.
I use the Ryco z442 filter without a worry, so Genuine or Ryco is up to you.

2) The stock oil sendor is not for a guage, it's for a light. S13's dont have an oil pressure guage. You cant use it for a guage, you have to replace it.

3) First of all, turn the ignition on and make sure the fuel pump primes (pressurises) the lines. The check all your fuel lines for leaks etc. Before you start the motor, disconnect the CAS plug. This will stop it from firing when you turn it over. So what you do is crank it over for about 30 seconds to get oil pressure through all the lubrication systems. After this, plug the CAS back in and start her up.

We allways use the genuine filter,
Many a datto has been stuffed by using an aftermarket unit.
In most cases theres no saving anyway.
You dont use cheap oils so dont use an inferior filter.

The oil pressure gauge used is your choice, if you want to run the idiot light only then just conect to the standard sender.
If using a dash gauge then you will need a 'T' piece to run both.
just get it at the right angle before the manifold goes on.
Just easier.

Baz,

Have Nissan decided to out-source the production of their oil filters to Thailand??? I bought two Genuine Nissan Oil filters recently and one was 'Made in Japan' (older one) and a more recent one 'Made in Thailand', will this make any difference to the quality of the filters?

Dazda, were you buying for L-series? I went in and got a couple (one spare of course) oil filters from nissan recently. Turned out they were a different part number. I don't know if the parts guy was screwing me or not.
Past nissan L20b filter were blue. The 'new' one I got had the same part number but with an 'AU' on the end. It also had less holes on the filter side and had a completely different O-ring. It also was a beige colour.
It looked mostly the same so I fitted it anyway. Since then I've had one problem with the filter coming loose and I think it leaks oil too.
I can take a comparison photo when I get home from work.

One is imperial the other is metric. And I bet I know who was the unfortunate one. ;) I too have used both the Z442 and Z445 (diffferent motors obviously) without any troubles.

Yeah it was for an L-series, but my understanding (and probably wrong) is that there is at least 2 or 3 different oil filters that fit the L-series... :?

The Made in Thailand one I have looks the same as the Made in Japan one (Blue with Dark Blue writing, etc) except for the country of origin printed on it (obviously)...

just started using the new fram oil filters the yanks made for the sr's they seem pretty good too, keep an eye out for em, there about the same price as a genuine too
