Hi all
Has anyone changed to retractable seatbelts? Where did you mount them, were there any mods to be done?
Cheers Jeff

I put in a set of 240k seat belts, i just bolted them to the same mounting points. They do get annoying around the neck area but thats just standard issue.

cheers

I installed off the shelf inertia-reel type belts in a '72. The biggest hassle was that the original "Kangol" belts had their upper mount above the rear door, rather than in the B pillar, and the sash came down via my neck rather than my chest.

While there are those out there who'd reckon this a good thing in my case  , I didn't like the idea. So I obtained some of the cage-nuts used when installing baby restraints and used them to move the upper mount to the B pillar. They worked a treat, looked like standard equipment and were a shitload safer than those useless "Kangol" belts.

I think the "Kangol" belts were unique to Australian assembled 1972 1600s, as part of the local content requirements for these cars. (It's also why Datsun switched from Hitachi electricals to Lucas "The Prince of Darkness" stuff!) If you've got them, you'll know it, and you'll want to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

Cheers,

Jeff,

All 1600s from 68 thru 71 had the belts mounted on the B pillar (as indeed most new cars do). In fact, in the 72, the holes in the B pillar were already there. All I had to do was get the cage nut into the pillar. (A neat trick itself)

When the belt was mounted from the B pillar, it extended properly from my shoulder, across my torso. If I had mounted it in the original position, the belt would've come down across my neck, threatening to decapitate me at the next stop sign!

Cheers,

I used some from a early 80s Bluebird hardtop, and they fit pretty well, a little neck scraping but not too bad, plus they are usually black. Holden monaro (old style) will fit also and can stille be bought new from Rare Spares.

I got Wrx Sti seats and retractable belts in my 1971 wagon.
with the factory 1600 seats the beltsran against my neck, just like the factory belts did.
Bolted the sti seats in and they seem to be bettere, the seats are mounted a little lower in the car aswell.
Funny how things work out.

Australian 1600s never came out with the belts on the B pillar. The B pillar on a 510 is too weak, this is why they were moved to the roof to pas the ADRs. You can pull the pillar right out by hand with a belt or rope tied to it - try it on a wrecked 1600. Correct way of fixing the problem is to leave them mounted on the roof. Get some retractables to suit a 1973 HQ Monaro coupe. These have a steel hanger with loop so the belt can mount from the roof, but it doesnt choke you aroound the neck. You can get them from Rare Spares (American Auto Parts). The part number on the instruction sheet is P/No. 511431600A Made by Klippan Safety Products. Lap Sash Retractable Belts with Drop
Link.

Cheers

ive used 180b retractables a coupla times. Cheap and good nick from the wreckers and used those seat belt wrap around velour things from Motormate to stop the seat belt cutting into my neck. Works great and is cheap as. Keep the belts mounted to the roof cos like the other guy said the b-pillars are only held in by a dozen or so spot welds top and bottom...

Prob when fitting retractable belts in a 1600 is that there is not enough room for the retractor mechanism if you get the seat right back. We have a special lower mount that solves this prob. Has been approved by engineer & has passed SA RTB. Must be used with new drop link klippan belts to be legal.
