Guys,

I've heard some nasty rumours (from the wrecker) that the 280zx arse ends I have bought are actually R180s? It was a while ago that I was peering under them and I didn't pay much attention because I was under the impression they were all R200s and that only the manual/turbos were LSDs.

The arse ends are from auto 280zxs. Australian Domestic Market.

Any ideas?

Dave

I've seen a 280ZX with an R180. Not sure if it was factory fitted, but I guess it was.

You should be able to tell by measuring the spacing between the two bottom bolts on the diff cover.

IIRC:
90mm = R180
100mm = R200

It's mentioned on an old Ozdat thread somewhere (their numbers are correct). If you do a search you should be able to confirm it.

Cheers,

Beef.

IIRC the auto ZX's came with the R180, not sure about the manuals.

Dave,

I checked my old files for you (I was looking for R200's in wrecking yards, and I kept notes on what certain cars had).

280ZX 2+2 targa

Made: 1/82
Trans ID: 3N71B RB35

First section of the trans ID says it's a 3 speed auto. Second section says it's an R180 with a 3.5:1 ratio.

In short: It was an auto, and had an R180.

Cheers,

Beef.

Bummer. So what cars came with R200s then? (I need axles that will go close to fitting a 240Z).

HR31 did. What else?

Dave

I got my r200 out of a 260Z with half shafts. Its open and I'm guessing it's 3.9. I just got lucky at Pick'n'pay less one day and the best bit someone else had previously had a go at getting it out so there was only bout 3 nuts to go :D , $80.00.

Both my '77 260z 2+2 and my '81 280zx had R200s. No question. They were both manuals, and the 280zx had the CV joint rear end (not unis).

Cheers,

Not much in the wreckers yards!!! I found that in wreckers yards, it was an R160, R180, or a missing R200! :roll: Also, the more exotic, import skylines etc., aren't usually found at u-pull-it. :cry: Hard to find good info on.

My net searching has me believing:

Some 260Z
Some 280ZX
Some or all Z31 300ZX
Some R30
Some R31
Some S12 (very rare, apparantly)

I think my diff's out of a HR31 (as you mentioned), because it's the 4.6 ratio. I'm not aware of any other model coming with that ratio. :?

Sorry I can't be of more help.
