1600dave - if you're thinking about turning an SC14 into a mad max style charger with activating the electromagentic clutch at will then you're in a ofr a number of burnt out clutches.

that clutch is for disengaging the charger at idle (which is why hooking up those 3 little hoses is so important). using it activate the charger at 3-4-5000 rpm is just gonna burn it out good and proper.

as well as that - there's not really any point running an s/c engine with the s/c off because it becomes a MAJOR inlet restriction so ends up being a slug anyway.

It wasnt actually an SC14 i was looking at using, it was an M45 i think, off a Merc, seen it on ebay US.
And no i wouldnt be using it like that at all, but i did read on toymods, in a post where someone was wanting to use one on an SR20, that quite a few people had it coming on and off at high revs on their custom setups/modded toyota's and didnt have any issues with the clutch.
and i just read your other post in the other topic.
the M62 i was referring to is from the US and used on american 3800 engines, in buick bonnevillies/riveria's i believe. the blown commo uses the M90

A cheaper alternative to the Opcon for those on a budget (and willing to do some research  ) might be the blower off the Mazda Eunos miller cycle engine.
Seeing as someone posted a link to this thread, I thought I'd add that I've since acquired one of these Mazda Eunos blowers cheap off eBay

Now that I have one in my hands, it does seem as though it would be harder to fit. Main issues are that it is LOOOOOONG (hard to mount) and looks like it needs a few oil feeds from the motor to lubricate it, as opposed to the Eaton which is completely self-contained and runs permanently-lubricated bearings.

Still, its there in the shed ready for the next project

just i've seen some eaton blower's off Merc's that have a clutch setup similar to the SC12/14's
With some ECUs it is yes. Microtech for example. Autronic SMC requires you to have the laptop to switch between them, dunno about SM2+.

I used to run my SC14 off most of the time then just turn it on and have a little squirt every now and then. Was very slow with it off, but still ran just fine, would rev up just as high as you'd like but was just a total slug. I still drove it like that 90% of the time I might add.

Pro, Why would you turn the clutch on at 3000 while you're driving? Surely you would turn it on manually then drive it. The idea dave had I think was to have that switch change the maps as well.

I see no advantages in having the blower turned off.
My boosted stanza L20 returned 10km litre around town with
fangin & demos tossed in. much better enconomy.

Inlet temps and wear in the teflon coated rotors. Same reason they put the clutch on it from the factory.

Hmm, was my undersanding that the clutch disengaged at idle only.
an emmission thing.

Inlet temps at light throttle are ambient as there is no compression taking place.

The rotors should not contact each other.
the teflon is there to absorb fine particles much the same as crankbearing
babbit coating.
thats on the sc12/14, other types vary. but no contact is the norm, with the exception of the old wray & norman types.

god dave, i don't endorse it at all and i completely agree with you. :!: :!: :!:

some people see "electromagnetic clutch" and think "mad max" and it honestly does burn the clutch out. it's different if you're cruising at 100kph and then turn it on to overtake someone, but turning it on under load like "that" movie will definitely burn it out.

i guess it's the novelty :?: - i dunno.

surely the only advantage of the clutch is to switch your supercharger off so that your wacking huge turbo can kick in
