Can anyone tell me if there's a power steering solution for the Datsun 180B (610)? My Dad has a really nice stock 180B SSS 2-door Coupe but it's a really heavy thing in the steering dept. Something that's bolt-on from another model would be great.

Cheers

Try and get the set-up off an R30 Skyline - haven't tried it myself but they look very very similar

AR610, is this something you've heard someone try before? Or is it just a possibility?

Check some other posts, there is some good info. on re-conditioning the factory steering linkage to tip top operation.
Wheel alignment and tyre pressures will also have a lot to do with the state of the steering

...as do tyre width and wheel offset.

You could always get him a bigger steering wheel? :P

Hehehehe, true. But I only just got him a nice sports wheel to replace the POS rubbery one he had before.

Might be time to get it up to Wilkinson Suspension and ask them to take a look at it.

the steering box might be shagged.

my 180B was as light as a feather with 155 R13s on it.

No, no, no, not flaming at all.

I just couldn't resist. I'm sure Brendan's mature enough not to take offence at it. We were all fragile newbies once

No malice intended

Yes..Try the R30 Skyline setup. It has a PS Box which is similar to the Old skool datto's such as your's. You would have to look at mounting the pump and doing the lines etc etc but it can be done with not that much effort....

Brendan,
Have a close look at the steering box.
If the top of the box is roughly triangular & is held on with 3 bolts
then its a 3.2 turns lock to lock unit.
If thats the case find a 76 model 180B with a rectangular box with 4 bolts holding the top. this one has 3.7 turns lock to lock & will make the steering lighter to turn.
This is not mentioned in most shop manuals.
Direct swap over with no mods needed at all.
cheers

Hahahaha, thanks Warps for the friendly greeting. I might be a noob on here but not to car forums. I did cack myself at that post.

Anyway, thanks Baz for the insider info. I'll check it out next time I'm over Dad's place. I reckon a combo of all the solutions given (including the weight bench : ) will make things a little easier.

Cheers
Brendan
