Post subject:  starts, runs, then stops???

Hi,

I just bought a KB10 Datsun 1000 coupe. I couldn't get it to run, by pouring fuel down the carb and turning it over, it wouldn't even kick.

So I went out and bought a new distributer cap, plugs and coil and now I (by again pouring fuel into the carb) can get it to run for 20 sec or so and then it stops. I used the same resister that was on the coil, but I didn't change the condensor as it looks like a bit of a buggar to get to the screws.

Any ideas what to try next? I was going to try without the resistor, or even try using the old coil again incase I bought the wrong one. My new one is a bosch su12r

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ray

your coil should not be the problem.
check the timing again and maybe adjust and start it again.
Also maybe get another rotor button they can fark up somtimes
new points are worth buying aswell

How well does it run for the 20 seconds??
have you got your leads on the dizzy the right way round?

just keep pouring fuel down the barrel of the carb and trying to start!!

cheers hayden

Sounds like a fuel problem ... have you checked that the fuel pump is
actually supplying fuel to the carb? Disconnect output tube from pump at carb connection and hold it in a jar while someone else turns the motor over.

forgot to say, yes I changed the points and rotor as well. I just wasn't sure about what the coil resister and dissy condensor actually do and therefore could they stop it running?

I thought about fuel as well as it seems to use up what I pour in and then stop. The fuel gauge showed half but after running it a few times there was still no fuel to be seen in the filter. I manually filled the lines to and from the filter but still had the same problem. I will try disconnecting the carb end like you said.

The car has been sitting for two years not running so I knew I'd have a bit of a time starting it.

When it ran it ran fine. No coughing or anything. Lovely to see my little original tacho worked as well!!

Thanks for the speedy replies,
Ray

now i think about it, i will most definatly be a fuel issue. Do as neil says and disconnect the pipe and see if any fuel is coming out.
I have has instances where the seals have broken down in the fuel pump and it won't pump!

I would be unplugging the fuel filter in the engine bay.

Using a small compressor to gently blow the fuel line out down to the fuel tank.

Sounds to me you have dirt stopping the fuel from coming out of the fuel tank.

Goodluck.

The little coupe runs!!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I tried SSS_510's idea of blowing air back towards the petrol tank to clear any rubbish in the line and it worked!!! Even though the fuel in the tank is 2+ yrs old.

The little coupe is on its way to being back on the road! Now its time to fix the brakes so I can go around the block. Then the gearbox.

Everything else works fine, even down to the original AM radio/heater/and even the Nissan soft plastic bag washer bottle!

Thanks again everyone,
Ray
