Post subject: | Crankshaft pulley question - KA24 vs L18 |
Having read about the KA24 head - on - L20B block conversion, I have a bit of a strange question. Seems the bottom ends of these two motors are somewhat similar. Does anyone know if the crankshaft pulleys would be interchangeable as far as fitting onto the crankshaft ? Its probably a long shot, but may save me some time / money / all of the above. Reason I ask is that I want a crankshaft pulley for an L18 that will take a ribbed belt to drive a supercharger, rather than the normal v-belt. With a bit of luck, KA24 might be suitable. Secondly, if anyone has a KA24 crankshaft pulley, what is the diameter of the pulley where the belt runs ? |

Dave, I don't know for sure, but from what I've seen it looks like the KA24 is smaller on the nose of the crank. I think this is to allow the smaller timing sprocket to have some meat in it. As I say, I'm not certain about it. If you find out, let us know. Best of luck. |

Thanks. I thought it was a long shot getting it a) to actually fit and b) to be the right diameter to drive the supercharger at the right speed. I might still try to track one down. I guess if its smaller, I could get it machined to the right size. Better than being too big. |

Don't know if this is going to be of any use to you at all but my old SC14/L28 setup used what I was told was a VT power steering pump bolted onto the front of the crank. I'm not 100% on what a ribbed belt is but this was like this VVVV. Diameter was around 170mm IIRC. Enough to spin the SC14 to 5psi anyway. Dave |

That's pretty much what a ribbed belt looks like. Might have to have a look under the bonnet of the family VX commodore. Mmmmm, wonder if the wife would notice if power steering suddenly stopped working ? I thought that the SC14 used a v-belt ? Unless I'm getting confused with other types of supercharger - I pretty much looked at them all over the last month or two . Perhaps they came with both. Anyway, if some (or all) SC14's came with ribbed-belts, I might give Datsport a ring to see if they would have a suitable pulley lying around. |
