Just curious are ECU's Specific transmission eg, autos have specific ecus.

of course i am talk about OEM Ecu's

Depends on the OEM.
The LS1's (I belive) have an intagrated ECU & Auto trans CU.
Therefor, if you change ECU's (eg. aftermarket) & want to keep the factory Auto, you have alot of mucking around to do
(Or just ditch the factory Auto tranny).

I think the vast majority of new cars will have atleast some integration between the ECU and the auto. The simple reason being that the throttle position dictates when gear changes occur. TPS is part of the engine, thus there must be atleast some communication between the two.

As to whether this communication is isomorphic (only the ecu for the car will work with the auto) I'd go with what Lurch said and say it depends. New cars are likely to be using a digital signal tot he auto (CPAN?).

hmm, answer my question to an extent, would the l28(non-turbo) ECU work with a manual box seeing as it was a auto

I would think so. I think the L28E uses a very old Bosch system (Ljet perhaps?), and its interaction with the auto is relatively limited compared to newer systems.

Also, the engine ECU doesn't depend on signals from the auto ECU, I think its the other way most of the time.

i would imagine it would be both ways, assuming the park sensor leads to the ecu not just part of the ignition circuit

just speculation :D
