Gday, Ive been slaving over this project for the last month or so and I'd like to share it with you all. The reason I don't own a 1600, 180b or anything with IRS is because this "79 sunny was given to me by my grandfather. The little A12 was ridden with lack of grunt. So one of my dad's mates who has been rallying datsuns for over 20 years, David Quill (father of Tom Quill who won the SA rally champoinship a few times) said that he had an L18 out of a 720 ute with low mileage that we could put in. So we stripped the old girl and got ahold of a stanza crossmember, sump & pickup, bluebird series 2 5speed (while the block had a deck & hone, head having new valve guides and hardened seats and a shave). The engine is stock for the moment with new rings and bearings and twin hitachi/SU's. We had to modify the pedal box to accept the clutch master cylinder which was a bastard but it worked. We used subaru outback engine mounts to provide the right amount of clearance for the sump & sway bar. The suspension consists of sunny front struts with gas inserts and 280zx rear springs with noleathane busches, The rear is stock springs with gas shocks. The brakes are standard but Im goin to updrade them to 280zx vented discs with hilux 4spot calipers on the front and r31 discs & calipers on the rear. She still needs a paint job and clean up and an interior revamp but it drives alot better than it did. The next thing will be modifying the head (cam, ports ect.) and getting a h165 stanza rear end for it (which bolt straight in). Im willing to answer any questions, enjoy the pics.

Thanks

Nice car man, I love the L series conversions into cars that came out with A series.

Ever since seeing that sunny in that motokhana video get up on 2 wheels i've had respect for them.

Very nice car mate, i'd lower it a bit tho.

Im getting adjustable lowering blocks for it when I put it in track days/sprints ect. But as a street car and having my p's with a soon to be weberised engine would attract enough plod attention without being lowered, so theres my reason. But yes, a good suggestion.

Very nice! I've done the exact same thing...
2 Questions: why did you use Subaru engine mounts?
Stanza/200B would have done the job.
Also, why the Bluey 5-speed? I found the Stanza SSS 5-speed (stumpy box) a much better fit (like not haveing to cut a new shifter hole...)

But very nice all the same!

ahhh i was waitig for that one. I couldnt find a stumpy box in good nick in Mt. Gambier, so I opted for a fully rebuilt bluebird box which was a bargain at $300. The subaru engine mounts happened to be in the shed which we were working on the sunny and they only required one hole drilled in the engine block mounts so i got brand new mounts for nothing! :D

Who could give me an "estimate" for a 1/4 mile time for the sunny.

Engine - L18, Twin 45's, about a 72 deg cam - aprrox power - 150 - 165hp

Drivetrain - 4:8 Diff, locked, BB series 2 5 speed (unsure of 5th ratio), Wheels - either 185/60/R14's or 195/50/R15's (Have the same OA diam.)

Weight - approx 900kg (Standard Sunny with A12 weighs 865kg, estimate based on that, will try and get her on a weighbridge some day  )

If there's any more info needed please ask :)
