could be diff. I had a very similar problem little bit noisey while driving and real noisey when slowing down and yes it went away when pressing in clutch,
pull the gearbox out put new bearings through it and still same problem pulled it out again went right through it couldnt find a problem put it back in swapped diffs over fixed. quiet as.
was spewing that it was that easy after pulling the box out twice
the guy i got the box rebuilt from said it could be the diff. i thought he was just trying to get out of looking at the box again but a few people have said what you have just said.

and if i remember correctly i put a r180 in near the time the noise started last year :x

but i do kinda like the idea of a stanza 5 speed (dog box?) were first is down the bottom. loved driving my old datto with one of them.

oh yea he gonna put it on the hoist next week to have a look atb things, so thats a start.

maybe a Z box would handle the SR no worries and be cheap to buy ?
do you use a standard tail shaft with the Z boxes ?

SR boxes are fairly expensive, between 400 and 800 depending who you get them off. shortened tailshaft is required in a 240z (non flange style), unsure if the rest of the z boxes are the same length.

I guess i should report back!

it turns out that the horrible noise i was getting was comming from the clutch, which turned out to be a smaller FWD SR20 type clutch and flywheel, Bluebird u12?
the springs in the center were very loose including some metal thing around them and thus causing lots of vibration and noise.

I just put a turbo flywheel and heavy duty turbo clutch in so hopefully no problems in the near future.

so i dont really hate my SR box anymore, with a rebuild and new clutch it seems very nice now! :D

just wish I put a light weight flywheel in at the time of doing the clutch. though the turbo weighs the same as the one i had, it has a ~8mm greater diameter on the face and does seem a tad slower on acceleration and revs drop a bit slower too.

but hey, no noise!

I'm glad you solved your noise probs - that's great! I've had similar dramas myself.

But I feel a tad sorry for the box rebuilder.... It must be a 'fun' job at times when you fix the thing a customer brings in, but they come back later on questioning your work because another part of the car puzzle aint quite right!

Not having a go at you Manga, just feelin for the box fixer guy!
Maybe you should drop him a 6 pack one Friday arvo

Hey, I was all set to let you know that a CA20 5 speed (S3 Bluey in my case) is a bolt on without mods to an SR bellhousing. I did it myself as a cheap <short> 5 speed in my low boost/not that powerful SR20DET 1600 wagon. Worked a treat and was quiet (but my clutch was new )

Jeff,

Did you happen to measure the gear widths? Any difference? CA20 gearboxes are a lot cheaper than SRs!

Jeff,

by short do you mean short in length ?
ie the same length as the original 1600 boxes ?

thanks Jeff.

From http://forum.910bluebird.com/index.php?showtopic=428

The CA20 box is apparently much weaker than the CA18DET box, good for up to 150rwkw. The thing people seem to like is that they are cheap to replace when they go pop.

Helix - yes the gears are substantially thinner in the CA20 box than the SR box. I didn't get any measurements, but I remember taking some side by side pics of the two gearsets when I rebuilt my S14 SR box a few months back - will see if I can dig em up.

datto - by short I mean shorter than the SR box - ie less floor pan carnage. I had to elongate the shifter hole about 30mm back to fit the CA20 box, plus shorten the stock wagon toothpick tailshaft. Made a custom gbox mount too, just because it was quicker than going to the wreckers to see if any std ones fitted.

FWIW I never had any issues with the weaker gearbox - even after confusing several Commodore heroes at the green light Grand-prix  - but then again it was a stock boost, mostly 2" exhaust, non-intercooled setup - hardly set the world on fire.....

Hey Guys,

does anyone know if the bellhousing of an sr20 manual gearbox is the same length as the L16 ones ?

Thanks Jeff
