No worries mate.

First of all turn the engine to Top Dead Centre by lining the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the 0 timing mark on the engine.

This means that #1 piston is at the top of the bore, the problem is we don't know if this is onl yhe exhaust stroke, or the compression stroke.

So, you pull the rocker cover off and look for both cam lobes at the front of the engine to be pointing upwards in a V shape. This means that this is the compression stroke. Pull the dizzy cap off and where-ever the rotor button in the distributor is pointing is where you should connect the #1 spark plug.

Or you could just take a guess and follow what was in that link and put #1 onto the dizzy at the top-left position standing from the passengers side.

Also remember, the distributor turns ANTICLOCKWISE.

You shouldn't have to take the rocker cover off. Just take the oil cap off and shine a torch down there, and look at the cam lobes for No 1 (front) cylinder. They should both be facing upwards if the rotor is pointing at No 1 ignition lead.

Here's one I prepared earlier. I've even colour-coded the plug leads for you to make it easier (well, actually they have been like that for years  )

The black one is number 1.

The yellow one that looks like its going into the steering box is actually number 4.

Ok Ill make to ez as possible for you

Turn motor till its TDC on the pully look for the 0 deg mark
Your INTAKE lobe should be close to the 11 o clock position. then look at crank pully and put on 0 deg

now look thru the front cover where the dist goes on.
it should be in the 11.28 o clock position as in the photo.

drop dist on untill it locks down. that will be #1 plug wire. Do a rough look and get that rotor to be very close to that plug wire(adjust the 10mm bolt timming plate to get it ON)

now go counter clock wise 1 3 4 2 fire order.

should start right up.

Should be the same as my pic - you may have a slightly different looking distributor / cap as mine is a Hitachi one off a SSS - but no. 1 should be near enough to the same spot. You can't really hurt anything if you get them in the wrong spot - it just won't start or run :(

The cap on mine actually has the cylinder number cast into it next to where each plug lead goes in - makes it all too easy !!!! I'm not sure where I got it from or what brand of distributor cap it is though.
