Post subject:  best 5 speed for L16 1600

guys,
just landed myself a 71 1600. its auto at the moment and i'm planning on converting it to manual around xmas time.
I've done a bit of reading and found R30, SSS Stanza and 180B 5 speeds bolt up directly with no tail shaft mods, first did I read that right?

Secondly, what box is most widely available, and are there any other options that bolt straight up (and i realise nothing bolts straight up, but you know what i mean, no bell housing mods, tailshaft mods blah blah)

Thirdly, i'm after something with a good ratio for cruising on the highway as much as one for acceleration, now obviously I can't have the best of both worlds, but I'm after something that won't rev too high on the freeway, and i'm prepared to sacrifice a bit of down low to get that

thanks in advance
mick

Stanza SSS bolt in with no Driveshaft difference, but it does need you to fabricate a gearbox mount.

No idea about the 180B, but I thought they were long boxes :P

The one I have (it was in a 180B SSS, so I assume its a 180B box) is a long box, so will need tailshaft shortening for a 1600.

I did the same thing Micko, auto to a manual. I used a 5 speed from a bluebird and the tailshaft that came with it was the same length as the one that was in it stock! Just used two spacers about 8mm thick between floor and g/box xmember. Even used same speedo cable. Then fitted an R180 with 3.55 ratio and was perfect. Pick-up was even good. I can measure the length if you like.

I fitted an R30 gearbox to my 1600 that used to be auto. Piece of cake to fit, and really light. First gear is nice and short, and gets you moving pretty quickly. the only modifications that needed to be made are the wiring for the reverse switch (different plug I think from memory) and the gearbox x-member. Oh and cutting the hole in the trans tunnel! That's it!!

I highly recommend the R30 box. They are cheap (depending on where you go around $350 from a wreckers), light and reasonably strong. (L20's are more than fine!!) 5th gear is perfect for cruising.

I think the only thing wrong with the box (because it is so much lighter than the auto) is the car then looks higher than normal due to the weight reduction

Sorry to dig up an old thread but are all R30 gearboxes the same? And nicknamed 'stumpy'?
Looking to do Datsun 1600 four speed to five speed conversion with minimal fuss
Cheers
