Organise a working bee Dave, not that motivation is your issue but always good to get some people around and talking about your projects etc. I'd make the drive up to say gday. Might even have a few 180bsss parts you can have.

Cheers

I'm just hoping the recently-found enthusiasm doesn't wear off over the next few weeks, I'm off to Sth Africa for a couple of weeks.

Tonight's effort - upgrade the SU's with new easily adjustable floats (old ones were only adjustable by adding or removing shims), and replacing stock float chamber needle / seat with high-flow ones to hopefully stop an issue where it develops a miss on hard left hand corners.

Are they genuine british SU's? Because mine were the round top Hitachi's and the floats in the fuel bowls looked very different to those. Mine were oval shape, kinda like a smaller "kinder surprise" toy case!

Yep, genuine british 1 3/4" HS6 carbs. I was going to use 240Z carbs, but spares for british SU's are about a thousand times easier to find and a fraction of the price when you do find them.

If you get the HS6 with the linear bearings, they are so much better than the Hitachi.

Where are you sourcing the parts for the SU's?

Yep, ^^^ they have plenty of stuff, got all the rebuild stuff there.

I got the floats and high flow jets from burlen.co.uk, sumidel didn't have them when I bought them a while back.

Sweet, I've got 3 MK2 Jaguars all needing some care and attention, so the logical thing to do is go and buy a 1600 again!! Thanks

In light of the "why is the forum so quiet" thread, I thought I'd update this.

The 1600 now has a hydro handbrake (I got soft motorkhana-ing my MX5, centre mounted handbrake is much easier for handbrake turns).

I've given it a good going-over after a year or two of laying idle in the shed, put an old "Rallymaster" seat and proper harness in for the passenger (which may be me as the daughter has started doing motorkhanas in the MX5, I've been relegated to passenger / coach / navigator), replaced the whole brake system including all brake lines, gave it a wash and polish and parked it back in the shed.

Oh, also restored a set of wheels and whacked some slicks on them.

Now to see how it goes at Eastern Creek tomorrow.

future plans are to possibly replace the alloy cage with steel so I can logbook it, and I'm heading back to Bathurst in November for "Challenge Bathurst - Thunder". Basically full track regularity for two days

Nice Dave! What wheels are they?
Got any pics of the hydro handbrake mounted?
Good to hear you are getting back out there mate.

Just old 80's / 90's 15" CSA star mags. Same as the ones already on the car, so I know they fit. And by "restore", I mean wash them, quick sand and a new coat of white paint.

I'll grab a pic of the hydro handbrake tomorrow.

I've never run full slicks before, so that will be interesting. Plan is to just scrub them in for one session then back on the R888's for the rest of the day. Assuming the car lasts that long.....

How do you find the SU's man?
I remember having all sorts of trouble with mine in my old Datto. They just kept going out of tune and screwing up my idle mixers. If I gave them a flogging my idle would start flucuating between 800 and 2500 rpm. It was the only reason I went to webers.

Only issue I have had (and only with this set of British SU's) is that I have had to drop the fuel pressure to barely 1psi or the float chambers flood. Idle fluctuating is often an indication of throttle shaft wear.

Track day today was "interesting"......

First problem, drove the 1600 onto the trailer, put the keys on the neighbour's retaining wall while I strapped the car down and then drove to Sydney. With the keys still sitting on the retaining wall 2 hours away from Sydney

Quick trip to a locksmith (big plug for Arrow Locksmiths of Wetherill Park, friendly, quick and cheap service !!!!!!), $20 later and I had a nice shiny new key, cut from the code on the ignition barrel.

First session, all good.

Second session, on with the new full slicks to scrub them in. What a blast, so much grip :D

Third session, back onto the R888's. After a few laps, I smell petrol so pull into the pits only to find I had let the fire escape out of the engine  $20 ALDI fire extinguisher performed well, no more fire

So, what went wrong ? The bolts holding the fuel pressure regulator on backed out, allowing the fuel line to drop onto the radiator fan which cut a nice slice in it. Fuel + hot engine apparently isn't a good combination. I count myself very lucky, only damage is a melted radiator fan, few scorched wires and lots of soot and extinguisher powder through the engine bay. Didn;t even damage the paint on the bonnet (well, maybe the underside is a little scorched under all the soot).

Good news ? A new bit of fuel line and it drove off the trailer at home.

Sounds like you had an eventful track day.

Make sure you wash that fire extinguisher powder off as soon as possible. IT corrodes aluminium very fast.
I learn the hard way when I had a small under bonnet fire years ago and put it out with a dry powder extinguisher.
Left it for a week or so before I cleaned it and the car was never the same again.

Where did you get the slicks from dave? I would be interested in trying some one day.
