No video. I had the video camera all charged up and ready to go, pity the mount was still attached to the roll bar in the MX5 at home

I got the slicks from Option-1 in Qld, they were selling Achilles GS-328 slicks cheap that were getting a bit long in the tooth. Only cost around $400 landed on my doorstep. Their ad is gone so I'm guessing they cleared all the older stock they had.

I'll book the car in for an appointment with a hose tonight, I was going to do it on the weekend but sounds like sooner is better especially as its all over my nice alloy radiator

It's a bit of a reminder that we should plan for disasters (Dave puts his work hat on - IT Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Specialist :blahblah: ). I've seen a car burn to the ground when the little 1kg extinguishers CAMS require didn't do the job and they were left trackside holding an empty extinguisher and watching their car burn. By the time other competitors stopped and tried to help and the fire marshalls arrived it was too late, since that day I've carried two onboard just in case.

Another thing to consider is how quick you can get out of your car. I found out yesterday that I can't get out of the car whilst wearing the HANS - I can't get my head low enough to get it out under the roll cage as the HANS does what it is supposed to do and holds your head upright and fairly firmly centred. So had to sit in the car watching smoke pouring out from under the bonnet, unclip and remove HANS, then get out.

So, have a test run at an emergency exit from your car in full safety gear !

Definitely agree with the practise of getting out of a caged car with all your gear on. Something so simple as putting gloves on an missing the dexterity of not having them on makes a fair bit of difference in time.
Can you reach your extinguisher while the harness is fully done up?? etc.

Glad it was only a small fire mate.

Yep, my normal practice is to pull up in the pits, take my gloves off, undo the harness, undo the HANS from the helmet (a bit fiddly, have to reach around somewhere just behind your ears and detach the clips by feel), extricate the sunnies from inside the helmet, take helmet off, take balaclava off and leisurely clamber out of the car.

In an emergency, needs to be done a bit quicker !

I'll probably even go to the extent of sitting at home one night with HANS and helmet on so I can get a bit more familiar with detaching them quickly.

Dodgy mod # 123188

S15 gearbox mount is pretty soggy, allowing the box to flop around under hard cornering / over bumps and hit the transmission tunnel. So, I could re-do the gearbox x-member to drop the box a little, make a new gearbox mount out of nylon or similar to stiffen it up and drop the box a little, or try to stiffen up the existing mount.

I chose the easiest one, will see how it goes.

Take one S15 gearbox mount, mount it in the vice to compress it a little, add the contents of a half empty tube of sikaflex into all the hollows and empty space in the S15 mount, and hope for the best :?

And tonight's work, to make up for last night's dodgy effort on the gearbox mount - turned up a new pulley plus a new upper mount for the alternator in an attempt to stop the car from destroying alternators. Hopefully turning it a bit slower may help.

You have redeemed yourself Dave!
I'd be very curious to know how the gearbox mount goes.

CAMS compliant steel cage. Its booked in tomorrow to have a local guy bend the main tubes, then I'll make / weld / fit the rest of it.

I'm getting it log-booked with CAMS as its getting harder to enter events in a car that is neither CAMS log-booked nor road registered.

Plus I'm getting old / soft and worry more about safety than I used to. Especially since I'm heading back to Bathurst, lots of concrete walls and stuff compared to tracks I usually compete at. It will be slightly more comprehensive than the basic 6 point cage, with dual diagonals in the main hoop, extra diagonals between the rear legs, intrusion bars and a harness bar to get the harness mounting off the parcel shelf (never been 100% happy with that).

My only concern now is that the CAMS category I seem to fit best into (Improved Production) insists on "no more than 5 forward gears". Hoping I can scrape through the log book inspection with the 6 speed in. I just want a log book to use the car in regularity and supersprints, but the only check boxes on the CAMS log book form are for race categories so I have to pick one of them. Could always log book it as a sports sedan I guess......

Dave I believe you will get through the log book inspection for improved production not worries with a 6 speed.
They are looking at safety in that inspection.

The scrutineering prior to the IP events is where you will get picked up for a 6 speed.

They may get a bit funny about extending the rear roll cage into the boot area/shock mounts as this is not allowed in improved production

Actually, couldn't you get a logbook for a tarmac rally car.
These are allowed and invited to complete in improved production circuit racing and nearly fit into every other circuit racing category anyway.
It would also allow you to compete with a navigator in tarmac events as long as you built the cage with double crosses in the main hoop and rear legs

How hard is it to build in a 'gate' to stop you from getting 6th gear? Would that pass with scrutineers?

I'll check tarmac rallying out. Hopefully won't need diagonals in the roof like dirt rallying does.

There's also "Category 7 - Speed (Other) - Speed Only", which I gather is for cars that will only compete in Supersprints and similar (ie not race events). But I figured if I'm doing the logbook thing, I may as well get it for a race category in case I ever do any "real" racing.

The cage won't extend into the boot, it will finish on the wheel arch just inside the rear door (assuming I can get the required rear leg / backstay angle by terminating it there). I'll also look at dual diagonals in the rear legs, was only planning on putting one in but may as well get the cage to comply with as many categories as possible while I'm building it.
