Treated the 1600 to new tie rod ends, new brake hoses, new radius rod bushes and a tailshaft strap last week (due to very diligent scrutineers putting the car up on a hoist). Got it all fixed and made the trip to Oran Park on the weekend for a supersprint put on by the Hills District Car Club - my last chance to run there  . Houses are already being built only 100m or so from the end of the main straight.

Managed 1:36 for the GP circuit which I was happy enough with.

By the end of the day, the clutch hydraulics were shot, oil leaking everywhere from the bellhousing (so either rear crank seal or front gearbox seal), and datalogging showed I could only manage 139kph down the main straight

Last time I had it dyno'ed, the dyno guy commented on its severe lack of compression, so I don't think I can put it off any longer - its time for an engine refresh, so the 1600 will be out of action for a little while :impatient: . All has to be finished by Easter as I've put an application in for the FOSC 6 hour event at Bathurst  . Still have to wait and see if my application is accepted as apparently they usually have way more applicants than positions available.

My other dilemna is whether to do some bodywork ? At the moment a reasonable amount of the car still retains its original Datsun factory paint. It is starting to look a bit tatty though - dints and a few bits of rust. Don't know whether to paint it or leave it as-is for "nostalgic" purposes ??

Leave it for nostalgic purposes in my opinion, until it really starts looking bad. I quite liked the look of it when I saw it, partly for that reason. Get it going a bit better first and then tackle the body work.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards leaving it.

If I paint it, it'll just look like any other done-up 1600. At least now it has a bit of "character".

Not if you repaint it in the stock colour. I am starting to like the cars that have the factory colours:
Like the baby poo brown, "green guide" green, and all the other inconspicuous factory colours I can't think of. The colours that are a little rare (or not so 'popular') make the car IMHO.

SO repaint it with the stock colour, and keep that rust at bay. Makes it easier to pass scrutineers too..

Thanks for the offer, but I've already got a good L18 bottom end lined up - just bolt my good head onto it and away I go again

keep the look of it, gives it character, and how many people can say that 80% of the paint work is still original

make it rust free with your massive variety of tools - oxy, hacksaw and a file, last time i checked

and keep the 'ratsun' style of look about it

just give it some more power, if ben in his A14 120Y is quicker than you on the straights, you know that's its lacking

The paint is in reasonably good conditon Dave. There are a few re-painted areas where the colour match isn't brilliant, but it all ads to it's character.
I beleive any car can look good so long as the windows and wheels are clean. Tidy bumpers, stainless trims and the c pillar vents are a bonus.
Yours is a good tidy shell and it also has an interesting history.

If you are going to paint anything, do the 180B first!!!

Or just tidy up and paint your engine bay when you do an engine rebuild/upgrade on the 1600, character is good on the outside, but depressing to work with in an engine bay, and even you admitted to me Dave, that your engine bay is a mess

Dont worry Ben, not having a go at the 120Y, but it just doesn't seem right, esp seeing as the suspension/tyres on dave's 1600 is pretty sorted and the only thing it is lacking from a perspective's point of view is the power on the straights, because mid corner with a cocked inside wheel, it looks pretty cool

OK, its staying as-is. Might respary a few bits where the colour match is poor (ie driver's door that I had to replace due to an unfortunate "retaining wall incident").

Engine comes out in the next week or so, tidy up the bay, build high-comp bottom end, reco and fit current head to new block, and probably fit some 44mm SU's onto an old Lynx manifold I have that's made for the larger SU's.

Might have to paint the commodore before the Datsuns - we are looking to offload it for a twin cab 4x4 diesel ute but it had an unfortunate "camping" incident last week and an unfortunate "trailer parking" incident just before Xmas so its looking a bit sad :impatient:
