I borrowed a mate's SWR L18 1995cc engine for a season in my old 1200 coupe in the avatar - had 146rwbhp (about 110rwkw). I believe that engine has now picked up another 10bhp since it went back to SWR earlier this year back in his 1600.

G'day Tyrie,
Yep, my 1600 is the car that made 122kw atw on the autotech dyno earlier in the year. When we fit the new extractors currently being made, and Mark Banyard does some more of his magic with the head, we reckon there is another 10 or so kwatts hiding in there yet
And yeah, that would've been me at the servo on my way home after the Corsa rally on the 13th 14th Oct.
That was a great rally for us. I still cant believe we won it outright by 7 minutes !

I'll be up your way for the Nat Cap rally on the 17th Nov and then off to the Alpine rally in Victoria @ lakes entrance on the 24th and 25th. If your around, come and say g'day....

Cheers,

Claude...

I haven't, but Mark Banyard (the guy who built the engine) has...I'll see if I can get him to post one up for you.

I heard about that engine a little while ago through a friend of SW. Very impressive figures! Seems there's a few new tricks left in the old L series yet!

I took Stew for a run up the road in it at the Narooma Booma Rally earlier this year. Let's just say, the grin on his face was pretty big...

I believe he buys quite a few L series heads from a certain Mr Banyard in Canberra these days...

The dyno figures don't tell the whole story though....The thing is just incredible to drive. Its quite happy to potter around in traffic with out getting too cranky, then when you hit to go pedal....

Sounds very impressive. What sort of dollars did it all cost you or would it cost to the average bloke to get an engine like that built - if you dont mind me asking?

Sean,

I will let Claude talk about his motor specifically (if he wants to), but having had a conversation with the cylinder head specialist in question (Mark Banyard) only a week or three ago, to build a 4 cylinder L-Series the same, costs between $8k and $10k depending on the final specification and the starting point. If you have a competition engine with some good bits in it (rods, crank, etc) as a starting point, then it will cost less than starting from scratch (finding cranks & blocks and getting them crack tested, buying rods, pistons, etc).

IMO this price is very cheap, similar engines prepared by other engine builders would cost $15k or more and not put out as much grunt...

Wow, certainly less expensive than I was expecting it to be!
Would love to have a look at the port design on that head (and the valve locations and the chamber shape and and and).

Does he do much in the way of lower budget work and still get better than average results?

He can do stuff to specific budgets (and get the best gains for that given budget), but as you can imagine with results like this he is extremely busy...
