Datsun 1600
I bought it in 1996 in rather rough condition. It had a roll cage, some decent seats and a fairly stock L16 with extractors and twin Su’s. The first mod was harnesses closely followed by a cam and a skyline 5 speed. Over the years it developed into a worked L20 with compression, a works cam and a set of 45’s. (About 180 flywheel hp) The latest rebuild involved a decompressed L20, a jap L18 EFI manifold and a bloody big turbo. Running at the actuator’s factory 6psi it registered 196Hp at the wheels on the dyno. And that’s with the factory cam, a 2” intercooler and a monster engine fan. (Which is louder than the turbo.) Down the quarter it did a 14.5@99mph wheelspinning the whole way. (With an open diff, a very crunchy gearbox and crap tires.) With slicks, a decent clutch and a locker diff I’m hoping for a flat 13 before any more mods. Maybe that’s a little bit ambitious. Considering all work has been done on a tight budget, I’m overjoyed with the results. I’ve got a lot of fine tuning to do yet. But that’s all part of it. And a big raspberry for all those people that gave me crap for putting a turbo and EFI on an L series. Go the L! Many
