Datsun
1600 1972 model
I Have had this datsun for
10 years, in which time the old
L -16 was replaced with
a L-20 B with twin 1 3/4 inch SU's.
Best quarter mile time with
that set up was 16.4 sec.
Then fitted a naturally
aspirated FJ-20 using a SSS automotive fitting kit, and the times dropped
to 15.3 sec with exhaust system in place and 15.0 with no muffler.
When I moved to NZ in 1997 I was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy
and cheap Nissan import parts, including FJ-20 parts, were to obtain.
I sourced a FJ 20 T to rebuild for $900 NZ in August 1998.
The car was taken off the
road in early 1999, disassembled and stripped of all paint before
being sent to Classic Car Services at Petone, where Andrew and his crew
did a great job licking the paint and panels back into shape. It
was painted dark metallic green, a 1999 Nissan Navara colour.
During the 3 months the car
was at the shop I rebuilt the engine using + 0.5 mm forged pistons with
the rebore using a torque plate from my uncle, Jeff Watson (of the 8.1
second, FJ 20 engined Austin Healy Sprite fame). Other than that,
polished and shotpeened rods, a thorough balancing and some 580 cc/min
injectors, the motor is
basically stock. The
gearbox is from the naturally aspirated FJ-20 and appears to be holding
up to the strain
for the moment. Computer
is a LINK and the boys from Christchurch have been great , offering good
advice and after sales service.
Engine:
FJ-20 T, balanced, forged pistons,
polished and shotpeened rods.

LINK (controls fuel, ignition, boost)
Intercooler

Trans:
DR -30 5 speed (from nat aspirated car)
Diff:
4.1:1 R 180 viscous
(from
4 x 4 U 12 bluebirds - adapted to half shafts
and ring and pinion changed from 3.7 to 4.1)
Wheels:
Enkei 16 x 7 front, 16 x 8 rear.
Tyres:
Toyo Proxes TS 1, 205/45 front, 225/45 rear.
Suspension:
2 inch lowered 240 K springs all round,
Koni adjustable shocks front and rear,
K-mac castor/camber kits front and rear.
Wheel alignment: Front: 1.5
° negative camber, 4° castor
Rear 1° negative camber
Brakes:
Front:
GTS-T skyline 4 pots, custom caliper
mount on 240 K strut, 265 mm Mitsubishi
Galant vented discs
Rear:
180 SX discs and calipers, custom caliper mounts.
Best
quarter mile to date -
now 12.89 @ 110 mph (15
psi boost, street tyres).
The only mods since have
been a larger 65 mm throttle body from an XF falcon and a revision of the
intake up
pipe from the intercooler
to straighten it out a bit. Am now also running either a 3.7 viscous
R 180 LSD for the drags, or a 4.1 R 180 clutch type LSD for track work.
BEN.
New Pics of revised intake
and new dyno sheet:-
(nb.power drop off above
5000 rpm probably due
to small standard turbo
heat soaking intercooler in the presence of inadequate air flow from the
dyno fan. BEN)
