Yep, I'm going to hit it with a 50/50 mix of Tectyl and fish oil now that its all done. Plan is to squirt copious amounts into the shell wherever I can get to, then spin it on the rotisserie to get the rustproofing to flow everywhere (probably all over me and the shed floor as well :roll: )

Its getting exciting now that the bodywork is finally done :woohoo:

The rate you're going Dave, you will be able to park this in the sea for a few weeks and upon emerging it will still be rust free! Although I'd really rather you didn't do that. Looking good :thumbsup:

At the rate I'm going, it will still be in the shed in 20 years. I won't have to worry about rust cause it'll never get wet :roll:

Anyway, rustwork is completely done :cheers :woohoo: Time to move onto straightening and preparing the body for paint :impatient:

Here it is as it stands at the moment, various colours of primer, surface rust starting to form underneath the grey primer I used at first (that'll have to be sanded back and re-done :evil: ) and a really nice, clean underside :mrgreen: . Also covered in lots of dust (should have kept the tarp over it :roll: )

Bodywork to be done really only consists of getting panel gaps right and getting it dead straight. I will have to get it off the rotisserie to do that as I can't really get at the taillight panel to work on it, and can't fit the front apron, bonnet or boot (all because the rotisserie gets in the way). Oh, I also need to weld on a few of the little "pins" around the windscreen that hold the clips for the chrome trim on - these were removed when I cut out the rusted areas around them.

Box section underneath the radiator - rust chopped out and a new reinforcing section fabricated and welded in.

Spare wheel well, all welded up and finished with a skim of bog.

POR15 "Tiecoat" (the blue-grey paint) didn't dry where its painted over the Sikaflex seam sealer - quick wipe over with a thinners-soaked rag and it comes straight off the seam sealer, but stays on the rest of the shell :(

Spidery surface rust forming under primer - luckily its limited to one front wheel well and the taillight panel, I started using a different primer after that.

NOS guard needs to be stripped and weld up the jap-spec guard-mirror hole

Rear end looks a bit sad - I can't get good access to finish it off till I take it down from the rotisserie

Anyone know if you can buy these pins anywhere ? I could turn them up on the lathe, but it will take a while and be fiddly.

Started unpacking some other stuff, and found that the tarp I had put over the rear seat when I stored it up in the roof of the shed must have blown off a little. What was a very recently re-upholstered, perfect condition seat is now covered in dirt and dust :evil:

Mine too and i've only been working on getting the body right for the last 1.5 years. Did you go with Epotec 408 for the etch?

Don't weld up the fender mirror hole dude - that will ruin what is a very nice guard!
Either use a cover like factory (i have some you can have for free) or get some fender mirrors!
Would be a shame to ruin a mint guard like that!

Good work on the car, it's great to see it looking so complete!

i think you can get trim pins like that that rivet in for rare spares my mate got them for his Torrie but i wasn't THAT impressed with them. (i think they cost a fair bit for what they are as well)

Yep, used Epotec 408 for the etch primer after reading about it in your build thread - sticks like, well, like really sticky stuff. I'm very impressed with it (and with the price). I've done a few of the bolt-on panels today, next step is to hifill everything and start the blocking process to get it absolutely spot-on.

Burubado - too late, already welded up the holes. I just don't like the factory blanking plugs, and don't want to fit guard mirrors, so welding them up was my preferred option. I'm not aiming for a "custom" look, the exact opposite really with all factory trim intact, just wanted to neaten it up.

Wisey - I ended up getting some fibro nails (clouts) with the correct diameter shank and slightly oversized heads. Whack them in the lathe, hit them with a file, cut to length and they are perfect. Thanks to mydato for the suggestion. Already welded in (brazed actually) and looking good.

Had a bit of non-Datsun stuff slow me down, but I'm not too far off schedule. I'm still getting the body as straight as possible - hifill, guide coat, sand, hifill, guide coat, sand, etc, etc.

At least all the rust is done :roll:

Maybe not Xmas, but definitely (hopefully) early in the new year.

Struggling for time to play in the shed lately, what little I have has been spent working on the 1600 (6 speed gearbox conversion, complete brake rebuild, getting it ready for a trip to Philip Island later this year).

Biggest time-consumer has been taking on care of my elderly parents (mum has Alzheimer's, dad has Vascular Dementia), trying to keep them in their own home rather than a nursing home for as long as we can. Just takes it out of you, having to do everything for them from looking after the house through to calling in to see them every day to make sure they are taking their medication, etc.

Its just an unfortunate fact of life - they are well into their 80's and have had a good life. As the geriatrician puts it, its a fact of life that we are keeping people alive longer and dementia is becoming more of a problem. Dad, for instance, would have been dead in his 60's from heart problems if he was born a generation earlier. With the advent of bypass surgery, he has kicked on for another 20 years and succumbed to mental disease instead.

I am hoping to get to do a bit of work on the SSS soon, I have been toying with the idea of moving it to my parents garage so I can kill two birds with one stone - call in to see them, plus get dad down in the garage a night or two a week to keep him occupied and give him an interest.

Time will tell what happens.
