The tacho is an Impulse type.
The wires form the Primary coil of a transformer.
The Secondary coil is internal to the instrument.
The tacho operates from impulses in the PRIMARY ignition circuit: -

Just re-direct the circuit as shown.
If the tacho doesn't read then reverse the connections to the ignition circuit.

So I will still need the red to power and black to earth.
What's the easiest way to trace the IG wire I need to connect to?

Yes, Red for +12V, Black for Ground or -12V.
There should be a pair of dash lights that need to be inserted into the tacho rear as well.
Run a pair of wires of appropriate gauge into the cabin to the tacho from the Ignition Resistor.
Use the appropriate terminals to connect to your Blue/Purple loop.
Lift the terminal off the Ignition Resistor that goes to the Ignition Switch IG terminal.
This wire should feed 12V power to the Ignition Resistor when the Ignition Switch is in the ON position, test with a lamp or multi meter.
Use the appropriate terminals to connect the new wires, one to the now vacant resistor terminal, the other to the 12V power wire identified above.
As I said before, if the engine runs OK but the tacho doesn't work, reverse the wires going to the tacho.

All the above is required if you don't have or can't find a tacho plug in the dash loom.
If there, it will be a small 2 pin plug or 2 individual terminals with a wire loop inserted into it to complete the Primary Ignition circuit.
It may be inside a tube or taped up to prevent the wires from working loose.
To fit the tacho, you remove the wire loop and plug the tacho loop into the plug.
Highly unlikely that the wiring will be there but have a look just the same :)

Solved and get to bin the ugly auto meter gauge.
