Hello!

2 Quick questions ... i've just pulled the complete steering assembly out of the Stanza, im replacing everything.

I already have all brand new :
drag link
inner and outer tie rod ends
2 new tie rods
new lower control arm bushes
new castor rod bushes
(all new Datsport items  )

The steering box and idler arm are in terrible condition - is it possible to get new steering boxes from anywhere ? - If not, can they be reconditioned ? - is there anything inside them that can be replaced ? - If yes, where do you get these parts ?

And will a 1200 steering idler arm fit a stanza ? - They look the same, but just wanted to double check - i found one here :
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DATSUN-1200-FRON ... 439d5676ef

Next question - im going to re-paint the lower control arms, castor rods, castor rod mounting box bracket.
I've never restored parts like that before - do i just sand them back, spray them with an "etch primer" - then paint them with "chasis paint" - e.g: "Chasis black" ?

Is there any other paint that is a bit tougher to withstand stone chips ? clear coat ?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you tried adjusting the steering box? They have a screw that adjusts where the gears mesh and allows you to remove play. are you doing the ball joints at the same time?

most people just use black paint but i suppose stone guard would be more resistant (its the paint under wheel arches and shizzle)

The problem is - my steering box feels like its full of gravel .. its rough and clunky - i've noticed there are 3 bolts that hold on a cover - so im going to open it up and see if it is full of mud or if it needs to be replaced all together.

Any tips on preparing engine bay parts for paint ?

Is a wire wheel + degreaser + 'etch primer' + black paint/stone guard ok ??

Thanks again

wire wheel then sand with 800 grit wet sand paper then use a product called prepsol (preperation solvent) or degreaser if you can't be bothered lol then etch primer and stoneguard make sure its all covered ect, it might pay to hang them up so you can paint both sides at once, are you thinking aerosel or 2k primer?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
I know what you WON'T find inside the steering box!
Gear oil!
Sounds to me like it has been running bone dry and your balls are dry
Might be a good time to replace the whole deal.

theres some paint called por15 (paint over rust 15) it works pretty good you brush it on and it finishes with a flat finish, they reckon you dont even have to clean the rust of first, but i would just to be sure! its a little bit expensive but one can does a large area

Why dont you just get a 1600 idler arm? They arnt too hard to find i don't think. Best bet would be to measure the length of both if you have them both to see if they will work

What exactly is wrong with your idler?
They can be re-bushed with poly bushes and come up like new
Unless the shaft is badly pitted it can be a goer.

Im not sure how easy it is to find parts for the steering box's. I recall a thread a while back with people struggling to find the correct bearings. If you do find parts let us know where you get them because this is why i havent botherd with my own yet
