Ok. bought a brand new starter motor today, put it in, cranked it over on a full battery and it struggles to spin the L18 and starter gets hot.

Part ordered was a replacement for a 180B.

What could this be? The only thoughts I have is that it will suit a standard L18. Mines got really high compression, running double valve springs and bored out a bit hence putting a lot more load on the starter. I was using before hand a L series starter motor which was physically bigger in size, but was rooted, bearings were gone, and armature windings were shorted etc so wasnt too reliable.

Cheers, Josh.

Timing correct?
All cables in good condition? And heavy enough? including earths.
All connections secure?

If your car is struggling to turn over don't keep cranking it it'l kill your starter fast. Also make sure your battery is charged right up. If your voltage is low then this will cause a huge amount of heat to build up and kill everything faster as well.

Lower the Voltage the higher the current draw will be higher the current draw the faster things melt.

I would say battery cables or the ends need cleaning, Thats is it started ok before and nothing else was changed on the motor Like dizzy timmming off or something.

Even the stock motor have enough power to get a higher comp motor started.

I fitted all new starter and charge wires and my 200b was cranking over hell faster. have you checked voltage loss threw the wires with a multi meter? check full length and half way i found that was the first thing with old coroded or damaged old wires.

Did it have the same gear (size position etc) as the one you pulled out?

sounds like they gave you the wrong starter motor to begin with?

usually warranty only covers the same part number, funny how you got a different starter motor all together 2nd time round?

Yea im thinking someone made a cock up.
Only way you would get a different starter usually would be if it was superseded to a new model. But seeing how only a short amount of time has past i doubt that.
Atleast its sorted.
