Hey all,
Just looking to make the road noises from my 1600 a bit quieter. I currently have no carpet or lining in the boot so obviously i could put some sort of carpet in there. What else could i do? and what would be best to line the boot with?
Cheers!

its not really the boot that needs to be insulated, (unless its the drone of the exhaust u dont wana hear)

u will most probably have to apply sound deadening to the floor of the car under the carpet..
This is BIG BUCKS though..

maybee if ur running on bad shocks get them checked out.
also ur tyre profile might be too small, if ur running 17 inch wheels or something..

other than that, JUST HACK IT! its a 30 year old car, no matter what u do to it it will me still louder, bumpier, and rougher than an excel..

Jaycar sell good sound deadening material pretty cheaply. I fitted sound insulation under my Datto and also a lot behind the rear seat. Also make sure your weatherseals are all OK and doors shut properly, you can swap the rear door catches from a wreck to the front if they're worn out. Also some insulation under the bonnet makes quite a difference, and tyres like Aym says .Plus any holes that aren't sealed esp. into the engine bay, and body deadener underneath. I did this and my car is actually pretty quiet for a 30 year old 1600, but it's definitely no Rolls royce.

i started putting 1mm thick rubber sheet on the inside of the firewall and under the carpets above the underlay. it has made a huge diffrence.
next to do is behind the door trims.
all this rubber weighs a bit though, but you cant have everything i guess

We use accoustic foam material overlayed with an alloy foil.
Very good sound absorbtion, heat reflective and very light.
Best we have found.

Hello,

I'm wanting to eliminate some of the exhaust drone from my Z. Would it be better to apply sound deadener to the underside of the car, in an attempt to reflect the sound away, or add sheets/mats to the interior which my understanding is will absorb the noise?
Because the exhuast is 'droning' i'm thinking reflecting the sound would be the better option, what does everyone else think?

OMHO its easier to fix the exhaust if its exhaust noise.

What setup have you got, if its just one muffler at the rear get a resinator put in and your drone should be gone.

At the wavelengths that are exhaust drone, it won't make much difference whether the treatment is under floor or above it. The only reason you need treatment under floor/guards is to reduce the noise of stones hitting metal (and of course protect from corrosion)

The best bet is to:
1. Get exhaust/muffler setup best it can be (also check that it is well supported and using soft rubber mounts and not touching body or suspension anywhere)
2. Block all holes thru body and firewall and check all door/window seals
3. Add thick, hard backed insulation under carpet and against firewall (hard bit, be it plastic or foil must go to the top - this allows the thick bit to capture sound waves twice - once as it travels up, and again as it reflects off hard bit back down)
4. Add the stuff Baz suggested to the insides of your doors (glue to inside of door skin - as big a piece as you can)
5. Add a turbo (or 2 on the Z car) - good mufflers actually!

The accoustic foam is available from Datsport.
$38 meter ( best price anywhere)
