What are the three little lights that sit around the stock RPM gauge in a 1600? i want to ditch this and put in a 3 1/4 or something similar. Would this be hard to fit?
Cheers, Mike.

you have a tacho!!!! hmmmm yeah i will be ditching, well nothing as i have no tacho. does anyone know if you can fit three gauges in the bit under the heater controls? maybe 3 X 2inch. if you remove the tacho and the "idiot light" do you have to put the lights elsewhere?

graham, u must run the ALT light, as the resistance of the globe is what excites the alternator (starts the alternator charging). the OIL light is possibly the most important light in the whole car, as as soon as it comes on, u have no oil pressure, and can seize the engine and do lots of damage. the BRK light simply tells u that the handbrake is on, might need this 4 roadworthy or engineers cert (if applicable)

I have seen a datto with three 2" gauges mounted in the bit just under the heater controls. i have 2 bigger gauges (next size up from 2") in cups mounter under the ash tray and i reckon it looks hot :P

well i dont need any gauges really....but i WANT them. i would like a tacho in the left side of the dash where the idiot lights are. then in the centre bit a oil press, water temp, and fuel gauge.

could you fit a boost gauge in the bit where the fuel and water temp is? it very small and even if you caould would it be worth it?

or take out the entire centre dash bit? and fit a flat sheet of metal.... would l;ook very nit nice.

Personally, I like the later 1600 dash and think the best options for extra gauges is a small tacho fitted in the middle of the"idiot lights" and others mounted centrally in the dash or just under it.
The older 1600 dash is crap and while it's a lot of work I would prefer throwing the whole thing away and fitting another dash (preferablty the 180B SSS) but that does require the whole wiring harness to come with it.

I have a dash with a factory tacho inside the "idiot lights".
I guess i'd sell it if the price was right...

"Excites"? Doesnt the regulator maintain (i.e, regulate) the voltage from the alternator and control the charging too?
Can someone elaborate on this please?
Surely they wouldnt design the charging on the car to fail when a light globe filament breaks?...

Hey Graham, i've got a 3 1/2 inch el-cheapo speco meter exactly where you want it. This will probly sound dodgey but i removed the pivoting base and pushed it straight in, it is held in by itself clamping to the top and bottom of the dash, Ive brought the wires infront of it and brought them through the firewall, and so it looks a little less dodgey i used some narva electrical tube to tidy up the wires. Doing it this way i have a schmik original dash with no extra holes and a easilly removed tacho! which you can hide anytime! this isnt for everyone though! catchya

I fitted a tacho from an early 180B SSS (with round instruments) to this hole.

Just drilled three small holes where the idiot lights are so they would show through, touched up the newly drilled holes with matt black paint and installed it. Looked good and was a pretty good match for the existing speedo.

IMHO, the best spot for other guages is where the radio used to live. The ones I have seen have three 2" gauges fitted here.

What a stupid light..

When you think about it you have nearly done all the damge running your car on VERY LITTLE oil pressure... if the light came on when the pressure dropped below the safe level it would be better.. but hey what can u expect for 1970's :)

My 280zx has a oil pressure, volts, and a few others... cant remember :)
